Vitamin E (specifically as alpha-tocopherol succinate) has some scientific evidence supporting its role in liver health, particularly in the context of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Several studies, including randomized controlled trials, have shown that vitamin E supplementation may improve liver enzyme levels and histological features in patients with these conditions. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant effects, reduction of oxidative stress, and modulation of inflammatory pathways that are implicated in liver injury. For example, the PIVENS trial (2010) demonstrated that 800 IU/day of vitamin E improved liver histology in adults with NASH who did not have diabetes.

However, the evidence is not robust for general "liver detoxification" in healthy individuals or for other types of liver diseases. Major guidelines, such as those from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), recommend vitamin E supplementation specifically for non-diabetic adults with biopsy-proven NASH, but not for broader liver detoxification or for other liver conditions. There is little to no evidence that vitamin E actively "detoxifies" the liver in the sense of enhancing the organ's elimination of toxins. Therefore, while scientific evidence exists for certain liver diseases, the overall strength of evidence for the use of vitamin E in general liver detoxification is moderate to low.
