Coix (Coix lacryma-jobi), also known as Job's Tears or Yi Yi Ren in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. Within TCM, coix seeds are considered beneficial for promoting urination, reducing dampness, and supporting spleen and stomach health. While coix is not traditionally described as a direct "liver detoxifier," formulations that contain coix are sometimes used for conditions that TCM associates with "damp-heat" or stagnation, which can involve the liver. This has led to a broader popular interpretation that coix may help support liver detoxification, although this is not a classical TCM indication.

Scientific research on coix primarily focuses on its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and anticancer properties; there is limited evidence specifically validating its use for liver detoxification in humans. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest that coix extract may have antioxidant effects and could offer some protection against chemically induced liver injury, but clinical trials in humans are lacking. As a result, the use of coix for liver detoxification is primarily justified by its traditional use and theoretical rationale in TCM, rather than robust scientific validation. The evidence for its efficacy in this context is therefore rated as low to moderate.
