Bignay (Antidesma bunius) is a fruit native to Southeast Asia and is traditionally used in folk medicine for a variety of ailments, including as a general tonic and for liver health. In the Philippines and some other countries, decoctions or infusions of Bignay leaves and fruits are sometimes employed in traditional medicine with the belief that they can help "cleanse" or support the liver, possibly due to their antioxidant content. However, scientific studies directly investigating Bignay’s effects on liver detoxification in humans are scarce. Some laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that Bignay fruit contains phenolic compounds and flavonoids with antioxidant properties, which can theoretically help reduce oxidative stress in the liver and provide some hepatoprotective effects. For example, certain in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Bignay may help reduce liver enzyme levels and mitigate chemically-induced liver damage, though these results are preliminary and not directly translatable to clinical practice. Despite these promising findings, there is insufficient clinical evidence to conclusively support the use of Bignay for liver detoxification in humans. Its use for this purpose is therefore primarily justified by tradition, with limited supporting laboratory evidence but no robust clinical validation.
