Amino acids play a crucial role in liver detoxification processes, with scientific evidence supporting their use in this context. The liver’s detoxification pathways, particularly Phase I and Phase II reactions, rely on amino acids as substrates and cofactors. In Phase II detoxification, amino acids such as glycine, taurine, glutamine, cysteine, and methionine are essential for conjugation reactions, which help to neutralize and excrete potentially harmful substances, including drugs, toxins, and metabolic waste products. For instance, glutathione—a tripeptide composed of glutamine, cysteine, and glycine—is a key antioxidant and detoxifying molecule in the liver. Clinical studies have demonstrated that supplementation with certain amino acids or their precursors can improve liver function, particularly in individuals with liver disease or toxin exposure. For example, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a precursor to cysteine, is widely used to treat acetaminophen overdose by replenishing glutathione stores and supporting detoxification. Furthermore, research in conditions such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cirrhosis suggests that amino acid supplementation may help mitigate oxidative stress and support liver repair. While there is clear scientific rationale and some clinical evidence for the use of specific amino acids in supporting liver detoxification, the strength of evidence varies depending on the amino acid and the clinical context. More research is needed to establish optimal types and dosages for general detoxification in healthy individuals. Nonetheless, the foundational role of amino acids in hepatic detoxification is well established.
