Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mimosa pudica, commonly known as the Sensitive Plant, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. Within these traditions, the plant has been used as a remedy for a variety of ailments, including as a treatment for lice infestations. The practice typically involves making a paste or decoction from the leaves and applying it topically to the scalp to kill lice or ease irritation caused by their bites.

However, scientific validation for this use is limited. While several studies have demonstrated the plant’s antimicrobial and insecticidal properties in general, there is a lack of direct, peer-reviewed research specifically evaluating the efficacy of Mimosa pudica against lice (Pediculus humanus capitis). Most evidence supporting its use for lice comes from ethnobotanical surveys and records of folk medicine, rather than controlled clinical studies.

Therefore, while the Sensitive Plant is traditionally used as a lice remedy in some cultures and may possess compounds with potential insecticidal activity, robust scientific evidence confirming its safety and effectiveness for this purpose is currently insufficient.
