Evidence supporting the use of: Clerodendrum phlomidis
For the health condition: Leucorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Clerodendrum phlomidis, commonly known as Arni or Bhargi, is widely used in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for a variety of gynecological disorders, including leucorrhea (a white vaginal discharge). The rationale for its use is primarily based on historical and ethnobotanical records. Classical Ayurvedic texts and regional ethnomedicinal surveys report the use of the plant’s leaves, roots, and bark in decoctions or powders to manage vaginal discharges, believed to be due to its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Such traditional practices are still prevalent in rural India and some parts of Southeast Asia. However, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically evaluating its efficacy for leucorrhea. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of Clerodendrum phlomidis extracts, which might theoretically support its traditional use for infections or inflammatory conditions of the reproductive tract. Nonetheless, there are no well-designed clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies directly confirming its efficacy or safety in the treatment of leucorrhea in humans. Therefore, the justification for its use remains rooted in traditional knowledge rather than scientific validation.
