Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Balsam, particularly in the form of various resinous plant exudates such as Balsam of Peru or Balsamodendron species, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in South Asian and Middle Eastern herbal practices. In these traditions, balsam is reputed for its antiseptic, astringent, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are thought to help manage abnormal vaginal discharges like leucorrhea. Classical Ayurvedic and Unani texts sometimes mention balsamic preparations as part of formulations for female reproductive health, including leucorrhea.

However, there is a lack of rigorous scientific validation for these uses. Modern clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly evaluating the efficacy of balsam for leucorrhea are essentially absent. Most of the support for its use comes from anecdotal evidence, traditional knowledge, and its inclusion in multi-herb preparations. The evidence is therefore weak (rated 1), and its use should be regarded as primarily traditional rather than evidence-based. Those interested in using balsam for this indication should do so with caution and ideally under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider.
