For the health condition: Leucorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Alchemilla, commonly known as lady's mantle, has been traditionally used in European herbal medicine for various gynecological conditions, including leucorrhea (vaginal discharge). The use of Alchemilla for this purpose is rooted primarily in folk and traditional practices, especially in Western herbalism. It has been considered an astringent and tonic herb, believed to help "tighten" and tone the female reproductive system, thus reducing excessive vaginal discharge.
Historical herbal texts, such as those by Culpeper and other European herbalists, mention the application of Alchemilla infusions or decoctions for treating white vaginal discharge (leucorrhea), menstrual irregularities, and general uterine health. The plant contains tannins and flavonoids, which may contribute to its astringent properties, but scientific studies directly evaluating its efficacy for leucorrhea are lacking.
There is limited modern clinical research on Alchemilla specifically for leucorrhea. Most of the evidence remains anecdotal or based on longstanding traditional use. While some phytochemical studies confirm the presence of potentially active compounds, clinical trials validating its effectiveness for leucorrhea are absent. Therefore, the use of Alchemilla for leucorrhea is justified by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
