Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Acemannan is a polysaccharide extracted from the inner leaf gel of Aloe vera. Its use for supporting or treating lesions is primarily supported by scientific research, particularly in the context of oral lesions and wound healing. Several studies have demonstrated that acemannan possesses immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. For instance, clinical trials and in vitro studies have reported that acemannan can accelerate the healing of oral aphthous ulcers (canker sores) and other mucosal lesions by promoting fibroblast proliferation, collagen synthesis, and the release of growth factors.

One notable randomized controlled trial published in 2014 found that topical acemannan hydrogel significantly reduced healing time and pain in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis compared to placebo. Animal studies also suggest efficacy in enhancing re-epithelialization and reducing inflammation in skin wounds. However, while the evidence is promising, it is not yet extensive or robust, with most studies involving small sample sizes and short follow-up periods. Larger, high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings and to establish standardized protocols for use.

Overall, current scientific evidence supports the use of acemannan for certain types of lesions, especially oral lesions, but further research is required for broader clinical recommendations.
