Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus reuteri is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for various gastrointestinal health benefits, including its potential role in supporting or treating "Leaky Gut Syndrome" (increased intestinal permeability). While "leaky gut" is not universally recognized as a formal medical diagnosis, increased intestinal permeability is a legitimate scientific concept, especially relevant in certain conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease and celiac disease. Several in vitro and animal studies suggest that L. reuteri can enhance gut barrier function by strengthening tight junction proteins and reducing gut inflammation. For example, research in mice has shown that L. reuteri supplementation can decrease gut permeability caused by stress or infection, as measured by zonulin and other biomarkers.

However, direct high-quality human clinical trials evaluating L. reuteri for "leaky gut" are limited. Most existing human research focuses on related outcomes such as diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, or general gut health, rather than specifically on intestinal permeability. The evidence is promising but not definitive. Thus, use of L. reuteri for leaky gut is scientifically grounded but with moderate evidence at best. More robust clinical trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness for this specific indication.
