Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (formerly Lactobacillus plantarum) is a probiotic bacterium with emerging scientific evidence supporting its role in gut health, including conditions like Leaky Gut Syndrome (also known as increased intestinal permeability). Preclinical studies, primarily in animal models and in vitro systems, have shown that L. plantarum can enhance the expression of tight junction proteins (such as occludin and claudin), reduce gut inflammation, and decrease permeability caused by various stressors. For instance, several studies demonstrate that L. plantarum administration leads to restoration of barrier integrity in rodent models with chemically-induced gut permeability. Human studies are more limited but promising: some small clinical trials and pilot studies suggest that supplementation with L. plantarum can reduce markers of gut permeability and inflammation in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other digestive complaints, which often overlap with symptoms attributed to Leaky Gut Syndrome. However, there is still no large-scale, direct clinical evidence specifically targeting a diagnosis of Leaky Gut Syndrome, and the syndrome itself is not universally recognized in conventional medicine. Thus, while scientific rationale and preliminary evidence exist, more robust clinical trials are needed before definitive claims can be made.
