Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis is a probiotic bacterium commonly used in supplements and functional foods. Its use for supporting or treating "Leaky Gut Syndrome" (also known as increased intestinal permeability) is justified to a limited extent by scientific evidence, though most data derive from animal studies, in vitro experiments, or extrapolations from related gastrointestinal conditions. Some studies in mice and cell cultures have shown that B. animalis lactis can enhance tight junction integrity, reduce endotoxemia, and decrease inflammation associated with increased gut permeability. For example, specific strains like B. animalis lactis DN-173 010 and BB-12 have demonstrated protective effects on gut barrier function in inflammatory models.

In humans, the direct evidence linking B. animalis lactis to improvements in “leaky gut” is sparse and mostly indirect. Some clinical trials in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel diseases have shown modest benefits in gut-related symptoms and markers of inflammation, but few have directly measured changes in intestinal permeability. The scientific community generally agrees that more robust, targeted clinical studies are needed to confirm its efficacy for leaky gut in humans. Thus, while there is a plausible scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence, the overall quality and quantity of human data are limited, resulting in a moderate-low evidence rating (2 out of 5).
