Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Arisaema, a genus in the Araceae family (commonly known as Jack-in-the-pulpit or Cobra lily), is referenced in traditional systems of medicine such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In TCM, processed tubers of certain Arisaema species (notably Arisaema erubescens and Arisaema heterophyllum) are classically used as "Tian Nan Xing" or "Dan Nan Xing". These preparations are believed to "resolve phlegm," "disperse wind," and "relieve spasm," and have been used for respiratory ailments, including symptoms like hoarseness and throat inflammation, which may overlap with or be interpreted as laryngitis. The traditional use is based on symptom complexes rather than modern disease categories, and the herb is almost always processed to reduce toxicity prior to use.

Despite its historical use, there is little to no direct scientific evidence from modern clinical studies supporting the efficacy of Arisaema for laryngitis specifically. The evidence rating reflects the existence of longstanding traditional usage and some in vitro studies showing anti-inflammatory or mucolytic properties in Arisaema extracts, but not for laryngitis as a defined clinical entity. Additionally, raw Arisaema is toxic and can cause irritation or poisoning if not properly processed. Overall, the justification for its use in laryngitis is primarily traditional, with limited preclinical support but no robust clinical validation.
