Kamala (Mallotus philippensis), also known as red kamala or kumkum tree, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and other South Asian medical systems for supporting the colon and large intestine. Traditionally, kamala fruit powder was employed as a vermifuge and purgative, aimed primarily at expelling intestinal worms and parasites. This aligns with its use to "cleanse" the intestines, which is why it is often cited as supportive of the colon or large intestine. The resinous powder contains compounds such as rottlerin and iso-rottlerin, which have demonstrated anthelmintic (anti-parasitic) activity in laboratory and animal studies, but robust clinical trials are lacking.

While there are a few preliminary scientific studies noting its anthelmintic properties, there is insufficient modern clinical evidence to broadly validate its safety or efficacy for general large intestine health or other colon-related conditions. Most current use and recommendations stem from traditional practice rather than rigorous science. Side effects such as gastrointestinal irritation and purgation have been reported, which may further explain its traditional use as a "cleansing" agent. Therefore, the use of kamala to support the large intestine is justified primarily by tradition, with a modest evidence level.
