Colocynth (Citrullus colocynthis), also known as bitter apple or bitter cucumber, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Asia. Traditionally, the dried pulp of the colocynth fruit has been used as a potent purgative or laxative to relieve severe constipation and to stimulate bowel movements, thus supporting the function of the large intestine (colon). Historical texts and ethnobotanical records frequently mention colocynth as a remedy for digestive complaints, including indigestion and intestinal sluggishness.

However, the use of colocynth is not without risk; its purgative action is very strong and can cause severe gastrointestinal irritation, diarrhea, and even toxicity if used improperly or in high doses. Modern scientific studies are limited and mostly focused on its toxicity and pharmacological properties rather than clinical efficacy for colon health. As a result, while there is substantial traditional precedent for its use as a cathartic agent, there is little rigorous scientific validation for its safety or effectiveness in supporting the large intestine in a therapeutic context. Its traditional use persists in some herbal practices, but caution is strongly advised due to its narrow therapeutic window and potential for harmful side effects.
