Chinese mugwort (Artemisia argyi), known as "Ai Ye" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal traditions. Its application for supporting the Large Intestine (Colon) is rooted primarily in traditional practices rather than modern scientific validation. In TCM, mugwort is believed to warm the meridians, disperse cold, and stop bleeding. It is commonly used in moxa (moxibustion) therapy, where it is burned near or on acupuncture points to stimulate circulation and promote healing, including along the Large Intestine meridian. Historically, it has been employed to address a range of digestive disturbances, such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and irregular bowel movements. These uses are documented in classical TCM texts and have been handed down through generations. The rationale is based on TCM’s energetic theory rather than biochemical or anatomical evidence as understood in Western medicine. While there are some studies on the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of Artemisia species, these are not specifically tied to direct effects on the human colon or Large Intestine health. Thus, current scientific evidence is limited and does not robustly support its effectiveness for this purpose. Its main justification for use in supporting the Large Intestine comes from tradition and clinical experience within TCM frameworks, rather than contemporary biomedical research.
