Approximately 34-40% of chia seed weight is fiber, with both soluble and insoluble fractions. Insoluble fiber adds bulk and promotes regular bowel movements, reducing constipation risk—a common large intestine complaint. Soluble fiber, meanwhile, serves as a prebiotic, potentially fostering beneficial gut bacteria and contributing to the production of short-chain fatty acids, which are important for colon cell health.
Multiple clinical trials and human studies have evaluated the laxative and bowel-regulating effects of chia seeds. For example, randomized controlled trials indicate that chia supplementation increases stool frequency and improves stool consistency in individuals with low fiber intake or mild constipation.
