Buckthorn (commonly referring to Rhamnus cathartica or Rhamnus frangula, also known as alder buckthorn or cascara sagrada) has a long-standing traditional use as a natural laxative to support the large intestine (colon). Historical records indicate that buckthorn bark preparations have been used for centuries in European and Native American herbal medicine to relieve constipation and promote bowel movements. The effect is largely attributed to compounds called anthraquinones, which stimulate peristalsis (the contractions of the colon) and reduce water absorption in the intestines, resulting in softened stools and increased bowel movement frequency.

Despite this extensive traditional use, scientific studies on buckthorn are limited. Most of the available evidence is extrapolated from studies on related anthraquinone-containing plants, such as senna and cascara sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana). While these compounds are known to have laxative effects, direct clinical trials evaluating buckthorn’s efficacy and safety in humans are scarce. Additionally, improper or prolonged use of buckthorn can cause side effects, such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and electrolyte imbalance.
