Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium animalis
For the body system: Large Intestines (Colon)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Bifidobacterium animalis is a probiotic bacterium widely studied for its benefits to the large intestine (colon). Scientific research provides substantial evidence supporting its use for colon health. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that B. animalis, particularly the B. animalis subsp. lactis strains (such as BB-12), can help regulate bowel movements, alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and improve stool consistency. These effects are attributed to its ability to modulate the gut microbiota, enhance the intestinal barrier, and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria.
Clinical studies have demonstrated that supplementation with B. animalis can reduce intestinal inflammation, increase short-chain fatty acid production (notably butyrate, which nourishes colon cells), and support overall digestive comfort. For example, a study published in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics (2019) found that B. animalis improved symptoms in people with functional gastrointestinal disorders. Additional evidence comes from its use in fermented dairy products, where it has been linked to improved gut transit time and reduced incidence of constipation, especially in the elderly population.
While not all studies are positive and individual results may vary, the preponderance of evidence supports the use of B. animalis for promoting colon health. Regulatory bodies such as EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) recognize certain B. animalis strains as safe and effective for use in foods aimed at digestive health.
