Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Acacia fiber, also known as acacia gum or gum arabic, is a soluble dietary fiber derived from the sap of the Acacia senegal tree. Its use to support the large intestine (colon) is primarily supported by scientific evidence. Clinical studies indicate that acacia fiber can be fermented by colonic bacteria, leading to the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate, which play a significant role in maintaining colon health. Research has shown that supplementation with acacia fiber increases stool bulk and frequency, and may help alleviate symptoms of constipation and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Additionally, acacia fiber appears to have prebiotic properties, supporting the growth of beneficial gut microbiota including Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. While it is generally well-tolerated, acacia fiber’s effects have been less extensively studied compared to other fibers like psyllium, but the available data support its use for gut health and regularity. Traditional medicinal systems have used acacia gum for digestive health, but the modern rationale is primarily rooted in clinical and mechanistic studies. Thus, the evidence for acacia fiber’s role in supporting large intestine function is scientific and reasonably robust, meriting a high rating.
