Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bifidobacterium (including mixed species) is used to support lactose intolerance, and there is scientific evidence to support this application. Several clinical trials and mechanistic studies have demonstrated that certain strains of Bifidobacterium can help alleviate symptoms of lactose intolerance by improving lactose digestion. The primary mechanism is the production of the enzyme β-galactosidase (lactase), which breaks down lactose into more easily absorbed sugars, glucose and galactose. Studies have shown that consumption of dairy products fermented with Bifidobacterium (such as certain yogurts) increases lactose digestion in individuals with lactose malabsorption, leading to reduced symptoms such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea.

A 2015 meta-analysis (Oak & Jha, Nutrition Journal) found that probiotic supplementation, particularly with Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species, improved lactose digestion and tolerance in lactose-intolerant individuals. However, the clinical efficacy can vary depending on the specific strain, dosage, and duration of use. Not all Bifidobacterium strains have proven benefits, but several, such as B. longum, have shown significant effects in randomized controlled trials. While the evidence is not universal or definitive for all mixed Bifidobacterium preparations, the overall scientific consensus supports their role as an adjunct in managing lactose intolerance. Thus, the use of Bifidobacterium for supporting lactose intolerance is scientifically validated, albeit with moderate supporting evidence.
