Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bifidobacterium (mixed strains) is used to support lactose intolerance based on scientific evidence, though the strength of the evidence is moderate. Bifidobacteria are a group of probiotic bacteria that naturally inhabit the human gastrointestinal tract and possess the enzyme β-galactosidase, which breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose. Several clinical studies and reviews have shown that supplementation with Bifidobacterium strains can improve lactose digestion and reduce symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea in lactose-intolerant individuals.

A key mechanism involves Bifidobacterium's ability to ferment lactose in the colon, thus reducing the amount of undigested lactose that reaches the large intestine and causes symptoms. Randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that specific strains, such as Bifidobacterium longum and Bifidobacterium animalis, can increase lactose tolerance and decrease hydrogen breath test readings (an indicator of lactose malabsorption).

However, results are not universally consistent, and efficacy may depend on the strains used, the dose, and individual differences among users. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses conclude that Bifidobacterium supplementation is promising but not a guaranteed solution for all patients with lactose intolerance. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and moderate clinical evidence supporting its use, further large-scale and standardized studies are needed to fully establish its efficacy for this condition.
