Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis is a probiotic strain that has been investigated for its potential to support individuals with lactose intolerance. The scientific rationale is based on the capability of some probiotic strains to express β-galactosidase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose in the digestive tract. Several clinical trials and in vitro studies have suggested that B. animalis lactis may help improve lactose digestion and reduce symptoms of lactose intolerance such as bloating, flatulence, and diarrhea when consumed as part of fermented dairy products or as a supplement. For example, studies have shown that yogurts or fermented milks containing B. animalis lactis can decrease hydrogen breath excretion (a marker for lactose malabsorption) and reduce subjective symptoms in lactose-intolerant individuals. However, the overall body of evidence is limited and often confounded by the presence of other lactic acid bacteria in the products tested, making it difficult to attribute effects specifically to B. animalis lactis. Moreover, while some studies demonstrate modest benefits, others find no significant difference compared to controls. As a result, while there is some scientific basis for the use of B. animalis lactis in lactose intolerance, the quality and consistency of the evidence is moderate at best, justifying a score of 2 on the evidence scale.
