Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
False Unicorn (Chamaelirium luteum) is an herb that has been traditionally used by Indigenous peoples and in North American folk herbalism to support various aspects of women’s reproductive health, including labor and delivery. Historical texts and herbal compendiums from the 19th and early 20th centuries often reference False Unicorn as a remedy for "uterine weakness," threatened miscarriage, and to "tone" the uterus in preparation for childbirth. Its use was particularly popular among midwives and in Eclectic medicine for these purposes. However, these uses are based on anecdotal reports and tradition rather than systematic clinical trials or modern scientific validation.
Modern scientific evidence for the efficacy or safety of False Unicorn in labor and delivery is extremely limited. There are no well-conducted human clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies supporting its use for this indication. Most current herbal references note the lack of scientific support and caution against its use during pregnancy due to potential toxicity and adulteration concerns. As such, while False Unicorn’s reputation in historical and traditional use is well-documented, its evidence base is weak, and its use for labor and delivery is not supported by contemporary scientific research.
