Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Achyranthes bidentata, known as "Niu Xi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for reproductive health, especially in the context of labor and delivery. In TCM, Niu Xi is often included in herbal formulas to "invigorate blood," "dispel stasis," and "guide blood downward." Historically, it has been prescribed to promote uterine contractions, assist in difficult labor, and facilitate the expulsion of the placenta. Ancient Chinese medical texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and later Materia Medica compilations, reference its use for these purposes.
However, modern scientific validation for these uses is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have shown that extracts of Achyranthes bidentata can influence uterine smooth muscle contraction, suggesting a possible physiological basis for its traditional use. Nevertheless, robust clinical trials in pregnant women are lacking, and safety data are insufficient. As a result, its use to support labor and delivery remains primarily grounded in tradition rather than supported by scientific consensus or high-quality clinical evidence. Most modern obstetric guidelines do not recognize Achyranthes bidentata as a standard treatment for labor or delivery support.
