In these traditions, certain root tubers are thought to "support" the kidneys or nourish kidney energy, often as part of dietary or herbal protocols. For example, in TCM, yam (Dioscorea opposita, or Chinese yam) is believed to tonify kidney yin, and is used in formulas intended for kidney health. Similarly, some root tubers are used in indigenous medicine to promote general vitality or urinary health, which are sometimes associated with kidney function. However, the scientific evidence supporting the use of root tubers specifically for kidney health is limited. Most modern research focuses on the nutritional value of root tubers (fiber, vitamins, antioxidants), rather than direct renal benefits.
