Evidence supporting the use of: Ganoderma
For the body system: Kidneys
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ganoderma, commonly known as Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum), has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) where it is often employed to support general vitality, longevity, and organ function—including the kidneys. In TCM theory, Ganoderma is considered to nourish the "Kidney Qi" and is used in formulations for symptoms related to fatigue, poor endurance, and general weakness, which are sometimes attributed to impaired kidney function in this traditional system.
However, scientific evidence directly supporting Ganoderma's effect on kidney health in humans is limited. Preclinical studies suggest that Ganoderma extracts may have nephroprotective effects in animal models of kidney injury, potentially due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Yet, these findings are preliminary, and few high-quality human clinical trials have evaluated Ganoderma for kidney-specific outcomes. Thus, the use of Ganoderma for kidney health remains primarily rooted in traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. More research is needed to clarify its efficacy and safety for this specific purpose.
