Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Dwarf Nettle (Urtica urens) has a long history of traditional use in herbal medicine, including as a remedy to support kidney function and urinary health. Herbalists and traditional medical systems in Europe and Asia have used nettle species (including both Urtica urens and Urtica dioica, or stinging nettle) as mild diuretics, believed to increase urine output and help the body eliminate waste products via the kidneys. This traditional use is supported by several historical texts, folk practices, and herbal compendiums, which often recommend nettle infusions or extracts for kidney and urinary tract complaints, such as mild edema, kidney stones, and urinary tract irritation. The rationale is largely based on observed diuretic properties and a presumed ability to "cleanse" the blood. However, direct scientific studies specifically examining Dwarf Nettle's effects on kidney function are limited. Most modern research has focused on Urtica dioica rather than Urtica urens, and results are mixed. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that related nettle species may have mild diuretic or anti-inflammatory effects, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while the traditional use of Dwarf Nettle for kidney support is well documented, scientific validation remains limited, and its effectiveness is not strongly supported by modern evidence.
