Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Didymocarpus is an herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic and other traditional medicine systems, particularly in India, as a remedy to support kidney health and urinary function. The most common species referenced is Didymocarpus pedicellata, which is a key ingredient in some well-known polyherbal formulations such as "Cystone" by Himalaya. The traditional use is based on its reputed diuretic, anti-lithic (preventing or dissolving kidney stones), and anti-inflammatory properties. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its use for kidney and urinary tract ailments, including kidney stones and urinary tract infections.

Scientifically, there are limited studies available. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Didymocarpus pedicellata may inhibit stone formation and possess antioxidant properties, potentially offering protection to renal tissues. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains anecdotal or is derived from its use in polyherbal products, making it difficult to isolate its effects. Therefore, while its use for kidney support is well established in traditional medicine, scientific validation is still insufficient. As such, the evidence rating for its effectiveness in supporting the kidney body system is 2 out of 5, reflecting primarily traditional use with limited early scientific investigation.
