Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine as a remedy for supporting kidney health and urinary function. Traditional systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and various European herbal practices have used dandelion roots and leaves as a diuretic—an agent believed to promote increased urine production and thus assist in the removal of waste products and excess fluid from the body. This action was thought to "cleanse" the kidneys and support their function. The plant’s common names, such as "piss-a-bed," reflect its folklore reputation for increasing urination.

Modern scientific research on dandelion’s effects on the kidneys is limited and largely preliminary. Some laboratory and animal studies have confirmed that dandelion extracts can have a mild diuretic effect, which could theoretically assist in fluid elimination. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans directly assessing dandelion’s efficacy in supporting overall kidney health or in treating kidney diseases.
