Evidence supporting the use of: Black garlic
For the body system: Kidneys
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Black garlic has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asian cultures, where it is believed to support various aspects of health, including the kidneys. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), garlic, and by extension black garlic (which is simply aged garlic), is sometimes used to "tonify" or strengthen kidney function, although the rationale is based on energetic properties rather than modern biomedical understanding. The transformation of garlic into black garlic is thought to enhance its properties, making it gentler on the digestive system and increasing its "Yin" nourishing effects, which TCM associates with kidney health.
However, there is limited scientific research directly linking black garlic to kidney support in humans. Some animal studies suggest that black garlic has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and may protect against certain forms of kidney damage in experimental models, such as diabetic nephropathy or chemically-induced nephrotoxicity. These findings are preliminary and have not been robustly demonstrated in human clinical trials. Therefore, while black garlic is used traditionally for kidney health, especially within TCM, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for this specific use is still lacking and limited mostly to preclinical studies. The overall evidence rating reflects this gap between traditional use and current scientific validation.
