Baicalin is a flavonoid compound derived from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap), a key herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, baicalin-containing preparations have been traditionally used to "clear heat" and "detoxify," with some formulations indicated for kidney-related disorders, particularly those described as being due to "damp-heat" or inflammatory processes in the urinary tract. However, these indications are based on traditional theoretical frameworks rather than modern nephrological definitions.
Scientific studies on baicalin have mainly focused on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective properties. A limited number of preclinical studies suggest that baicalin may have renoprotective effects in animal models of kidney injury, such as diabetic nephropathy or ischemia-reperfusion injury, possibly via reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. Nonetheless, these findings are preliminary, and there is a lack of robust human clinical trials directly validating the use of baicalin or Scutellaria baicalensis extracts for kidney health. As such, the use of baicalin for supporting the kidney system is primarily justified by traditional use, with only limited and low-quality scientific evidence supporting this application.
