Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Noni (Morinda citrifolia) fiber has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Polynesian, Southeast Asian, and Indian systems. In these traditions, various parts of the noni plant—including fruit, leaves, and occasionally fiber—have been used to address a variety of ailments, including kidney-related issues. Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys sometimes mention noni preparations for urinary conditions, which may include kidney stones. However, these references are often non-specific, and it is unclear whether the fiber itself, as opposed to juice, fruit, or leaf extracts, was the active component.

Scientific research on noni fiber specifically for kidney stones is minimal to nonexistent. While some laboratory studies have examined the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of noni fruit and juice, there is little to no clinical or preclinical data directly evaluating noni fiber’s efficacy for preventing or treating kidney stones. The rationale in traditional medicine may be based on noni's purported diuretic or detoxifying properties, but these claims have not been substantiated in modern scientific literature for kidney stones, especially not for the fiber component.

In summary, the use of noni fiber for kidney stones is primarily justified by traditional use, with very limited and indirect scientific evidence available. Accordingly, the strength of evidence for this application is rated as low.
