Rating (out of 5): 2

Canadian Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for supporting urinary tract health, including the treatment and prevention of kidney stones. Historical records from European and North American indigenous medicinal practices describe the use of goldenrod infusions and teas as diuretics and anti-inflammatory agents intended to flush the kidneys and urinary tract, thereby helping to reduce the risk of stone formation and ease urinary discomfort. The German Commission E—a respected regulatory body for herbal medicines—has approved goldenrod for irrigation therapy in cases of urinary tract inflammation and kidney gravel (small stones), primarily citing empirical evidence and traditional use rather than robust clinical trials.

Scientifically, laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts from goldenrod possess diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and mild antimicrobial properties. These actions could theoretically support urinary tract health and potentially help reduce the recurrence of kidney stones. However, clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating Canadian goldenrod’s effectiveness for either treating or preventing kidney stones are lacking. Most available studies focus on its general effects on urinary tract function rather than direct evidence of efficacy against kidney stones. Thus, while traditional use is strong and some pharmacological rationale exists, scientific validation remains limited, and the overall quality of evidence is modest.
