Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Buchu (Agathosma betulina and related species) is a plant native to South Africa that has been used in traditional medicine, particularly among indigenous peoples and early European settlers. Historically, buchu leaves were prepared as teas or tinctures to address a variety of urinary tract ailments, including kidney and bladder issues. This traditional use extended to the belief that buchu could help "flush out" the urinary system and thus support the passage or prevention of kidney stones. However, modern scientific evidence to substantiate these claims is minimal. Most available research focuses on buchu's mild diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, but there are no rigorous clinical trials or substantive preclinical studies specifically evaluating its efficacy for kidney stones. Furthermore, established guidelines for the management of kidney stones do not mention buchu as a recommended therapy. Therefore, while buchu's use for kidney stones is rooted in traditional herbal medicine, scientific validation is lacking, and the overall evidence supporting its effectiveness in this context is weak.
