Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Borassus palm (Borassus flabellifer), also known as the palmyra palm, has a longstanding place in traditional medicine systems across South and Southeast Asia. In Ayurveda, Siddha, and folk medicine practices, various parts of the Borassus palm—including its fruit pulp, roots, and sap—have been used for a number of urinary complaints, including the management of kidney stones. The historical rationale is based on the plant's reputed diuretic properties and its supposed ability to "cool" the body, which traditional practitioners believe helps dissolve or expel urinary calculi.

However, there is limited formal scientific research directly validating Borassus palm’s efficacy for kidney stones in humans. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or based on ethnobotanical surveys. Some preliminary pharmacological studies on related palm species suggest possible diuretic or anti-inflammatory effects, but these findings have not been robustly replicated in clinical trials specific to Borassus palm or kidney stone dissolution. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition, modern medical evidence is lacking, and further research is needed to confirm any true therapeutic effect.
