For the health condition: Kidney Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
"Apple acid" commonly refers to malic acid, a natural acid found in apples and other fruits. The use of malic acid or apple juice for kidney stones is primarily rooted in traditional and folk medicine rather than robust scientific validation. Folk remedies, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia, have promoted apple cider vinegar and apple juice as natural approaches for the prevention or treatment of kidney stones. The traditional rationale is that malic acid may help to dissolve or prevent the formation of calcium oxalate stones by increasing urinary citrate levels, which can inhibit stone formation.
However, clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of malic acid or apple-derived products in treating or preventing kidney stones is limited. A few small studies and laboratory experiments have suggested that malic acid can increase urinary citrate excretion, which theoretically could reduce stone formation risk. For example, one pilot study indicated that malic acid supplementation led to increased urinary citrate in healthy volunteers. Nevertheless, such studies are few, often small in scale, and sometimes not directly focused on stone patients. There are no large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials that confirm significant benefits.
In summary, the use of apple acid for kidney stones is primarily supported by traditional use and anecdotal reports, with a modest and preliminary scientific rationale but insufficient high-quality evidence for strong clinical recommendations.
