Evidence supporting the use of: Tropical Almond
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Tropical Almond (Terminalia catappa) is traditionally used in certain cultures for a variety of medicinal purposes, including as a remedy for kidney-related ailments. Historical and ethnobotanical reports indicate that leaves, bark, and fruit of the plant have been used in folk medicine across Asia and Africa for their purported antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic effects. These properties have led to the traditional use of Tropical Almond in managing urinary tract infections and, by extension, kidney infections. However, the direct evidence supporting its efficacy in treating or supporting recovery from kidney infections (pyelonephritis) is extremely limited and largely anecdotal.
A handful of laboratory studies have investigated the antimicrobial activity of Terminalia catappa extracts against a range of bacteria, including some that can cause urinary tract infections. These studies are preliminary, conducted in vitro (outside the human body), and do not specifically address kidney infections. There are no robust clinical trials or systematic reviews that validate the use of Tropical Almond for kidney infection in humans. As a result, the evidence supporting its use is weak and based primarily on traditional knowledge rather than scientific validation.
In summary, while there is a tradition of using Tropical Almond for kidney and urinary issues, scientific support for its effectiveness against kidney infection specifically is lacking.
