Evidence supporting the use of: Stone Root
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Stone Root (Collinsonia canadensis) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, primarily among Native American tribes and later by 19th-century American Eclectic physicians. It was commonly used for conditions involving the urinary tract, such as kidney stones, urinary irritation, and sometimes for symptoms that could overlap with kidney infection, including painful urination. However, the use of Stone Root specifically for treating kidney infections (pyelonephritis) is based more on anecdotal and historical reports rather than rigorous scientific evaluation. Traditional texts often cite its purported diuretic, tonic, and anti-inflammatory actions as reasons for its application in urinary tract disorders, but there is little evidence to suggest effectiveness against bacterial kidney infections, which are serious and generally require antibiotics.
Modern scientific research on Stone Root is very limited, with few, if any, clinical studies directly assessing its efficacy for kidney infections. Existing pharmacological studies have focused mostly on its possible effects on vascular tone and hemorrhoids, rather than antimicrobial or nephroprotective properties. Therefore, while Stone Root’s use for kidney infections is rooted in tradition, there is minimal to no scientific support for its efficacy in this context, and it should not be relied upon as a primary treatment for kidney infections.
