Buchu (Agathosma betulina and related species, including ovate buchu) has a long history of traditional use in South African herbal medicine, particularly among the Khoisan people, for urinary tract ailments, including kidney and bladder infections. The leaves contain volatile oils such as diosphenol, which are thought to contribute to its purported diuretic and antimicrobial properties. Buchu was introduced into European herbal medicine in the 19th century, where it was used as a remedy for various urinary tract disorders. However, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for treating kidney infection (pyelonephritis) is largely anecdotal and based on traditional usage rather than rigorous scientific study.

Modern scientific research on buchu is limited.
