For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Guazuma ulmifolia, commonly known as "Guácima," is a tree whose leaves, bark, and fruits have a long history of use in traditional medicine in Latin America and parts of Asia. Among its many ethnobotanical applications, it has been used as a remedy for various kidney and urinary tract ailments, including kidney infections. Folk medicine practitioners prepare teas or decoctions from its leaves or bark, believing it to have diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties that may help flush out the urinary tract and alleviate symptoms of kidney infections. However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is very limited. Only a handful of preclinical studies have investigated the antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory effects of Guazuma ulmifolia extracts, and these studies are mostly in vitro or in animal models, not specifically addressing kidney infections. No robust clinical trials exist to validate its efficacy or safety for this condition in humans. Thus, while its use for kidney infections is rooted in traditional practice, scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak. Use for kidney infections should not replace standard medical care, due to the potential severity of such infections.
