Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

European goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for supporting urinary tract health, including the treatment of kidney infections. Historically, herbalists in Europe have used goldenrod as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial agent, based on the belief that it promotes urine flow, soothes inflamed tissues, and helps flush out pathogens and debris from the urinary tract. The German Commission E, which evaluates the safety and efficacy of herbal remedies, has approved goldenrod for use in supportive treatment of lower urinary tract infections and for kidney and bladder stones, though not specifically for kidney infections (pyelonephritis).

Scientific research on goldenrod is limited, particularly regarding its efficacy for kidney infections. Some in vitro studies have suggested that goldenrod extracts possess mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and animal studies have shown diuretic effects. However, robust clinical trials in humans focusing on kidney infections are lacking. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional use rather than modern clinical validation. Therefore, while goldenrod continues to be included in phytotherapeutic preparations for urinary tract health, its use for kidney infection is supported primarily by traditional rather than scientific evidence.
