Evidence supporting the use of: Devil's Club
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Devil's Club (Oplopanax horridus) has a long history of use among Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest for a variety of ailments, including infections and kidney-related issues. Traditionally, it has been used as a general tonic and for the treatment of ailments such as diabetes, tuberculosis, colds, and kidney problems, including infections. Ethnobotanical records indicate that preparations of Devil's Club root or stem bark were sometimes used as teas or poultices to address urinary tract conditions, which may include what is now classified as kidney infections. However, these uses are based on traditional knowledge and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous scientific investigation.
There is currently very limited scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of Devil's Club in treating kidney infections specifically. While some laboratory studies have identified antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in extracts of Devil's Club, these studies do not directly address its efficacy for kidney infections or provide clinical data in humans. No well-controlled clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate its safety or effectiveness for this particular use. As such, its use for kidney infections is justified primarily by tradition, with minimal scientific validation.
