Rose hips, the fruit of the Rosa canina plant, have been used traditionally for various ailments, but in recent years, there is a growing body of scientific evidence supporting their role in joint health, particularly in relation to osteoarthritis. Several randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have shown that standardized rose hip extracts can modestly reduce pain and improve joint function in people with osteoarthritis. The active constituents, including polyphenols and vitamin C, are thought to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which may help limit cartilage breakdown and reduce joint inflammation. A commonly cited meta-analysis in 2008 (Chrubasik et al.) found that rose hip powder provided a small but statistically significant improvement in pain and disability compared to placebo. However, the quality of the trials varies, and some studies report only modest benefits. The European Medicines Agency also recognizes the traditional use of rose hip for supporting joint health. Overall, while more large, high-quality trials are needed, current evidence suggests that rose hips may offer some benefit for joint support, justifying their use beyond tradition alone.
