Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in fish oil, are widely studied for their role in supporting joint health. Scientific evidence suggests that omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit individuals with joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids can reduce joint pain, morning stiffness, and the number of tender joints in people with RA. Some studies also report a decreased need for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) among those taking omega-3 supplements.
The proposed mechanism is that omega-3s decrease the production of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids and cytokines, which are mediators involved in joint inflammation. While most of the robust evidence is in populations with inflammatory joint diseases like RA, there is less convincing data for osteoarthritis and general joint health in healthy individuals. Safety profiles for omega-3 supplements are generally favorable, though high doses may have blood-thinning effects.
Overall, scientific validation supports the use of omega-3 fatty acids for joint support, especially in inflammatory conditions. The strength of evidence is moderate to strong for RA, but weaker for other joint issues.
