Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Juniper berries (Juniperus communis) have a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine across Europe and Asia. They have been used for various purposes, including as a diuretic, digestive aid, and to address inflammatory conditions such as rheumatism and arthritis—conditions often associated with joint discomfort. The rationale for their traditional use in supporting joint health is primarily due to their purported anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, as described in folk medicine and some historical pharmacopoeias.

However, scientific evidence supporting juniper berries specifically for joint health is weak. A few studies have identified that juniper berries contain compounds such as flavonoids and terpenes, which may possess general anti-inflammatory effects. Despite this, there is a lack of clinical trials or robust scientific research directly evaluating the efficacy of juniper berries for joint pain or joint-related disorders in humans. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional use, and modern clinical validation is lacking. Therefore, while juniper berries are traditionally used for joint support, the evidence base is limited, and their use for this purpose should be considered with caution.
