Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid found in oils such as evening primrose, borage, and black currant seed oils. Its use for joint health—particularly for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis (RA)—is supported by some scientific evidence, though the overall quality and consistency of the evidence are moderate at best.

Several clinical trials and systematic reviews have examined GLA supplementation in people with inflammatory joint conditions. A 2011 Cochrane review concluded that GLA from evening primrose and borage oil was slightly more effective than placebo at reducing pain and morning stiffness in RA, but the effect size was small and the number of high-quality studies is limited. Some studies have shown improvements in joint tenderness and function, while others have found no significant benefits. GLA is thought to work by being converted in the body to anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, which may help reduce joint inflammation.

Overall, while there is some scientific rationale and limited clinical evidence suggesting GLA may support joint health, especially in inflammatory arthritis, its effects are modest and not universally accepted. Major medical guidelines do not endorse GLA as a primary or standard treatment for joint conditions. More high-quality research is needed to clarify its role.
