Evidence supporting the use of: Gamma-linolenic acid
For the body system: Joints
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid found in several plant oils, such as evening primrose oil, borage oil, and black currant seed oil. Its use for joint support, particularly in inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis (RA), has been the subject of some scientific investigation. GLA is thought to exert anti-inflammatory effects by being metabolized in the body to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA), which subsequently gives rise to anti-inflammatory eicosanoids. Several small randomized controlled trials have examined the effects of GLA supplementation in RA and other inflammatory joint disorders. Some studies report modest improvements in joint pain, stiffness, and swelling compared to placebo, but results are inconsistent and often limited by small sample sizes and methodological flaws.
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses, including those by the Cochrane Collaboration, suggest that while there is some evidence of benefit, the effects are generally modest, and the quality of evidence is low to moderate. Most clinical guidelines do not currently endorse GLA as a primary or standard therapy for joint diseases, citing insufficient robust evidence. In summary, GLA has some scientific basis for use in joint support, primarily related to its anti-inflammatory properties, but the overall strength of evidence is limited, and it should not replace established medical therapies.
