Emu oil has been used traditionally by Indigenous Australians for its purported healing properties, including applications for joint pain and inflammation. The oil is derived from the fat of the emu, a flightless bird native to Australia, and has a long history of topical use for aches, arthritis, and general musculoskeletal discomfort. The rationale behind its use is largely based on its anti-inflammatory fatty acid composition, especially omega-3 and omega-6. However, while some small animal studies and limited in vitro research suggest emu oil may possess anti-inflammatory effects, robust scientific evidence from high-quality clinical trials in humans is lacking. The few human studies that exist are either inconclusive or of low methodological quality. Thus, emu oil's use for joints is primarily grounded in traditional practice rather than strong scientific validation. Despite its popularity in natural health circles and anecdotal reports of benefit, emu oil cannot be considered an evidence-based intervention for joint support at this time.
