Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is an organosulfur compound that has been explored for its potential benefits in supporting joint health, particularly in the context of symptoms associated with osteoarthritis and other inflammatory joint conditions. Scientific evidence for DMSO’s use in this area stems from its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which have been demonstrated in several animal and human studies. DMSO is known to penetrate biological membranes and has been shown to reduce inflammation and pain when applied topically.

Clinical studies from the 1960s and 1970s, as well as some more recent research, suggest that topical DMSO can provide modest relief of pain and swelling in patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and soft tissue injuries. For example, a double-blind study published in The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology (1986) found that topical DMSO resulted in statistically significant improvement in pain for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee compared to placebo. However, the quality and consistency of clinical evidence is mixed, with some studies failing to show significant benefit over placebo, and methodological issues are common.

Regulatory agencies such as the FDA have only approved DMSO for specific uses (e.g., interstitial cystitis), and it remains an investigational or non-approved therapy for joint conditions in many countries. Common side effects include skin irritation and a distinctive garlic-like body odor. Overall, while there is scientific rationale and some supporting evidence for its use in joint health, the strength of evidence is moderate and further well-designed studies are needed.
